Old city
It was interesting to note that the old town which dates back to the middle, has the modern city of Carcassonne surrounding it. With the withdrawal of Spain from the area, Carcassonne lost its importance. this led to the old city slowly being abandoned and falling into ruins. Restoration of the old city started in 1849, and today we can all enjoy its majestic beauty. From the top of the walls you have a very scenic view over the modern city and the valley down below.
I was thinking of giving the church a miss, but the rest of the crowd said, no we have to see it. It is an extremely large church and lovely and cool inside. Being used to ornate churches in Europe, I was quite amazed at how plain this one was. The church has beautiful large stained glass windows. On the walls there are many old gravestones + stone tablets. Entry is free. Maps of the church outlining points of interest are available for a small donation. Photography is allowed.
